Xunantunich Maya Ruin

Means "maiden of the rock" or "stone woman"

Xunantunich is a Maya site, located about 15-minute drive away from the Rainforest Haven Inn, San Ignacio, Belize. Xunantunich meaning ?maiden of the rock? or ?stone woman? in Maya, is situated on the Western Highway across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz. This site is less than one mile from some lovely rapids of the Mopan River and provides an impressive view of the entire river valley.

Today there is a very nice Visitor's Center which includes a scale model of the site which gives visitors a nice overview of the ruins. Most tourists make a point of climbing "El Castillo," it rises 130 feet above plaza level making it one of the tallest buildings in Belize. From the top of El Castillo you can enjoy a breathtaking, 360 degree, panoramic view over the jungle canopy of the Mopan, Macal and Belize River Valleys and the Guatemalan Petan District.

Getting there

From San Ignacio, you have two options. You can either take a taxi (it is better to catch the ones that stop besides ?Courts? NOT the ones that are park in front of the building, those are mainly for town limits. Tell the taxi that you want to go to the Succotz ferry which should cost around $3.00 USD. The other option is taking a bus, the ones that say ?Benque.? Simply mention to the conductor that you want to stop at the Succotz ferry. This site is less than one mile from the ferry therefore you can either walk it or pay for someone to take you to the visitor?s center where you will pay the entrance fee.
